What is Corten Steel?

Created in the United States in 1939, Corten or Weathering Steel is an alloy that forms a natural rust coating over time as it is exposed to the weather. The outer layer rusts forming a protective coating which prevents degradation of the steel inside. Corten Steel is used all over the world. Notably in the UK one of our greatest landmarks, The Angel of the North by Anthony Gormley is made from Corten. Other striking examples include the Chicago Picasso Sculpture and the Museum of Old and New Art in Australia.

How will your Corten Steel weather?

  1. When your edging arrives it will have a dark oily coating or in a stage of patina. The shade of this coating could differ depending on when the product was manufactured.
  2. As your Corten Steel edging begins to weather, the oily residue will break down.
  3. Your edging will begin to change colour, during this stage – the ‘run-off’ may stain stone or concrete surfaces that it comes into contact with.
  4. After 9 months, some ‘run-off’ may still occur.

Corten Steel (or weathering steel) is an alloy that naturally forms a rust coating over the first 9 months or so of its being exposed to natural weather conditions. Interestingly, due to the composition of this special alloy, this rust coating forms a protective layer that prevents further rusting. The steel underneath remains unimpaired as the outer layer continues to protect and regenerate as it is exposed to more water and oxygen. Due to this, Corten Steel requires next to no maintenance to keep it strong.

What if you want to speed up the weathering?

Fortunately, science is on your side with a quick and easy fix. All you need is salty water. Dissolve around 1 teaspoon of salt in about 1 litre of water to get a weak salt solution. Spray or paint the solution evenly over your Corten Steel and that’s it! Repeat this process around 5 times over the period of a couple of weeks and you’ll see the rust developing in no time.

Uses for corten steel garden edging

COR-TEN (CORrosion resistance TENsile strength) weathering steel was first invented by United States Steel for use in the manufacture of ore transports. Since its creation in the 1930s, a slew of artists and designers have seen the potential of Corten weathering steel to create installations of great style and beauty. The Adezz range is a notable addition to that list.

You will see in the gallery an image representing the ageing process that Corten steel goes through, you can see in the image the range of shades these planters take on as they form their protective coating.
