Cleaning your Corten Steel Water Bowl
Although the outside of the water bowl will form a rusty patina over time , the inside of the bowl is in constant contact with water so the corten steel will continue to rust.
This will discolour the water, we recommend refreshing the water at interviews.
Birds and other wildlife will drink, wash and leave waste in the water bowl , we recommend tipping out the water and refreshing for this reason also.
What is Corten Steel? [read]
Originally created in 1939 in the United States, Corten Steel (also known as weathering steel) is an alloy that forms a natural rust coating over time as it is exposed to the weather. The outer layer rusts, giving the steel its recognisable hue and acting as a protective barrier. Corten Steel is used globally as a diverse building material. Notably in the UK one of our greatest landmarks, The Angel of the North by Anthony Gormley is made from Corten. Other striking examples include the Chicago Picasso Sculpture and the Museum of Old and New Art in Australia.

How will your Corten Steel weather? [read]
- In most cases, your Corten Steel will be un-rusted upon arrival. It is completely normal for the steel to have a slight patina or dark oily residue.
- The Corten’s rust colour will start to appear shortly after the weathering begins. During this time, any run-off may stain stone or concrete surfaces.
- After weathering (around 6-9 months), some menial run-off may still occur.
After your Corten steel has arrived, please unpack the product immediately, so that any moisture between the packaging does not remain sealed. By doing this you will avoid any uneven weathering on your Corten steel product. [/read]
Speed up Weathering [read]
If you are looking to speed up the weathering process, then science is on your side with a quick and easy fix. All you need is salty water. Dissolve around 1 teaspoon of salt in about 1 litre of water to get a weak salt solution. Spray or paint the solution evenly over your Corten Steel and that’s it! Repeat this process around 5 times over the period of a couple of weeks, and you’ll see the rust developing in no time. [/read]
